Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, highlighted the transformative role of solar power in India’s agricultural sector. Sharing success stories from the ground, he said solar energy is not only boosting farm productivity but also improving the lives of farmers, particularly women.
Modi narrated the inspiring journey of Devki from Ratanpura village in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, who has come to be known as “Solar Didi.” With the help of a solar pump, Devki expanded irrigation in her village from a few acres to over 40 acres, enabling higher crop yields and better incomes. “Her foresight and determination have changed the landscape of her village,” Modi said, noting that farmers now pay her for irrigation services digitally through UPI.
The Prime Minister emphasised that solar pumps and solar-powered rice mills are reshaping rural livelihoods across India. “Hundreds of solar rice mills have been set up in different states, increasing farmers’ earnings and their confidence,” he said.
Calling solar energy a sustainable alternative to costly diesel and electricity, Modi underlined its role in promoting self-reliant agriculture while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. “Solar power is not just electricity—it is a new energy that brings light and prosperity to every village,” he added.
