Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that he will visit flood-affected areas of Punjab on Thursday to meet families impacted by the heavy rainfall and assured that the Central government will extend all possible assistance.

In a post on X, Chouhan said he had discussed the situation with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian.

“I will reach Punjab tomorrow morning and meet my brothers and sisters in the flood-affected areas. In this hour of crisis, the Central Government stands firmly with the people of Punjab and will provide all possible assistance,” he wrote.

Heavy rainfall has triggered a flood-like situation in parts of the state, including Gaggo Mahal village in Amritsar and Zirakpur, where waterlogging caused traffic congestion. Rising water levels in dams have prompted precautionary measures, with the Indian Army and locals assisting in repair works at embankments.

According to Ferozepur Deputy Commissioner Deepshikha Sharma, around 170 villages are submerged, with 60 directly affected. Nearly 3,500–4,000 people have been evacuated, and eight relief centres are operational. She assured that the dams in the region remain safe and urged people not to believe rumours.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a special relief package for states severely impacted by floods, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert warnings for several districts in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha, forecasting more heavy rainfall.
