A major security breach at the Parliament complex was thwarted on Friday morning after security personnel apprehended a man who entered the premises by climbing a tree and scaling a wall, according to Parliament security sources.
The intruder reportedly jumped the wall between TKR 2 – North Utility of Parliament gate and entered the compound before reaching the Garuda Gate of the new Parliament building from the Rail Bhawan side.
Personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stationed at Parliament immediately detained the man. He is currently being interrogated, officials confirmed.
The incident has raised concerns in light of past security lapses at Parliament. In December 2023, two individuals leapt into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery during Zero Hour, releasing yellow gas canisters and shouting slogans. At the same time, accomplices outside the building released coloured smoke while chanting anti-government slogans. Six people were arrested in that case.
Parliament security has remained under strict scrutiny since the December 13, 2001 terrorist attack, when militants from Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) stormed the old Parliament building. The attack claimed 14 lives, including five terrorists.
Officials have yet to disclose the identity or motive of the individual detained in Friday’s incident.
