Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray launched a scathing attack on Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw following a tragic mishap at Mumbra railway station that claimed four lives. Thackeray blamed the minister for negligence and mocked him as a “reel mantri” more interested in social media than railway safety.
Addressing reporters, Thackeray criticised Vaishnaw’s continued tenure despite public outcry. “The people of India have demanded his resignation multiple times, but he has no shame. He carries on,” said the Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA from Worli.
Referring to the Mumbra incident, where several passengers fell from an overcrowded local train, Thackeray said, “Rail mantri has become a reel mantri. There have been multiple terrible train accidents in the last two to three years, but no one is taking responsibility. This is solely the responsibility of the railway department and the railway minister. Instead, he’s busy making funny speeches and comic reels.”
According to Central Railway officials, 13 passengers fell from a packed train on Monday near Mumbra station in Thane district. Of them, four succumbed to their injuries while four others remain under medical care.
Central Railway CPRO Swapnil Dhanraj Nila stated that overcrowding likely caused the accident and announced plans to retrofit all existing rakes to include automatic doors. “All new rakes will be AC with automatic door closure systems. We urge passengers not to travel on the footboard,” he said.
The incident, which took place on the down/fast line, caused significant disruption to local train services.
Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde visited the injured at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. Expressing grief, he posted on X: “Heartfelt condolences to the citizens who died. We are ensuring that the injured receive full support and treatment.”
The tragedy has reignited concerns over Mumbai’s suburban rail network and drawn political fire over alleged apathy and inadequate infrastructure.
