On the occasion of India’s 76th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag at Kartavya Path, followed by the National Anthem and a resounding 21-gun salute fired from 105-mm Light Field Guns, an indigenous weapon system. This marks the beginning of the Republic Day celebrations in the national capital.
President Murmu was joined by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the Chief Guest for this year’s Republic Day. Both Presidents were escorted by the President’s Bodyguard, the senior-most regiment of the Indian Army, and arrived at the venue in the traditional buggy, a ceremonial practice that was revived this year after a 40-year hiatus.
The parade commenced with a soulful rendition of ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha’ played by 300 cultural artists, who used a blend of indigenous musical instruments from across India. Instruments such as Shehnai, Sundari, Nadaswaram, and Dhol, among others, resonated with the melody, rhythm, and aspirations of a billion hearts.
Following the cultural performance, the parade proceeded with the recognition of the nation’s highest gallantry award winners. Param Vir Chakra recipients Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd) and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar (Retd), as well as Ashok Chakra awardee Lt Col Jas Ram Singh (Retd), were honored for their acts of valor and self-sacrifice.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial at India Gate, marking the beginning of the Republic Day tributes. Following this, PM Modi and other dignitaries proceeded to Kartavya Path to witness the grandeur of the parade.
In keeping with the government’s Jan Bhagidari initiative to encourage public participation, around 10,000 Special Guests from various fields were invited to witness the parade. These guests, including top performers and beneficiaries of government schemes, represent the architects of Swarnim Bharat (Golden India).
A historic highlight of this year’s parade was the first-ever tri-services tableau, symbolizing the spirit of jointness and integration between the armed forces. The tableau, themed ‘Shashakt aur Surakshit Bharat’ (Empowered and Secure India), depicted a Joint Operations Room, showcasing the synchronization and communication among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The Republic Day celebrations will culminate with the Beating Retreat Ceremony on January 29 at Vijay Chowk. This centuries-old military tradition marks the withdrawal of troops from the battlefield at sunset and their return to camp. For the first time, only Indian tunes will be played during the Beating Retreat Ceremony, symbolizing the unity and spirit of the nation.
