Prime Minister Narendra Modi will distribute more than 65 lakh property cards to rural property owners via video conferencing today at 12:30 PM. This milestone is part of the SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) initiative, which aims to transform rural India by providing legal property ownership records to households in inhabited village areas.
Launched on April 24, 2020, on National Panchayati Raj Day, the SVAMITVA scheme utilizes drone and GIS technology to map residential properties in rural areas, providing property owners with a “Record of Rights.” This initiative is a step towards empowering rural India, enabling economic progress, and enhancing governance.
Key objectives of the scheme include:
– Reducing land disputes by offering clear property ownership records.
– Facilitating the monetization of properties to secure institutional credit through bank loans.
– Enhancing property tax assessment and village-level planning.
– Promoting rural empowerment and ensuring accurate property data.
The scheme has made remarkable progress, with drone surveys completed in over 3.17 lakh villages, covering 92% of the targeted areas. So far, nearly 2.25 crore property cards have been prepared across 1.53 lakh villages.
The scheme has reached full saturation in states and Union Territories like Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tripura, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Haryana. Significant progress has also been made in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and several other regions.
By providing clear ownership records, the SVAMITVA scheme has significantly reduced property-related disputes in rural areas. The initiative has also facilitated the monetization of rural properties, enabling property owners to secure bank loans and unlock their economic potential.
Prime Minister Modi first distributed property cards virtually on October 11, 2020, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the scheme has become a cornerstone of rural empowerment in India, marking a milestone in the country’s governance and development journey.
The distribution of over 65 lakh property cards today is another step towards realizing the vision of a self-reliant and economically robust rural India.
