Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence on Sunday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will form the next government in Delhi. He targeted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), mocking its broomstick symbol and saying the party is already facing defeat, with members resigning ahead of the Assembly elections. “Jhaadu ke tinke bikhar rahe hain” (Parts of the broomstick are splintering), Modi quipped.
His remarks came just days before the February 5 elections, following the resignation of eight AAP MLAs who stepped down after being denied tickets for the upcoming polls.
Speaking at a public rally in New Delhi’s RK Puram, PM Modi compared the arrival of Basant Panchami, a time for change, to the “new spring of development” that Delhi will soon experience under BJP leadership. “In a few days, a new spring of development will arrive in Delhi. This time, the BJP government will form in Delhi. The ‘AAP-da party’ has wasted 11 years. My biggest request is that we be given a chance to serve the people of Delhi,” he said, promising a prosperous future for the poor and middle class under a “double-engine” government.
He urged voters not to give AAP another chance, warning that a repeat of their leadership would waste another five years in the city. “We are already seeing that before the voting, parts of the broomstick are scattering everywhere. AAP leaders are leaving because they know how angry the people of Delhi are with their party,” Modi stated.
PM Modi contrasted AAP’s false claims with his own credibility, saying, “Modi does what he says.” He referenced his commitment to strengthening four key pillars for building a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) — the poor, farmers, youth, and women. He highlighted the recent Union Budget as a guarantee to fulfill these promises, noting the government’s initiatives for free food, healthcare, and permanent housing for the underprivileged.
The Prime Minister also touted India’s growing economic strength, claiming that over the past 10 years, the country’s economy has risen from 10th to 5th place globally. He said that the BJP government is using the nation’s growing wealth for the welfare of its citizens, unlike other governments that might have diverted funds into corruption. He added that, with the new budget, manufacturing costs for everyday goods such as clothes, shoes, TVs, and mobiles would decrease, boosting the “Make in India” initiative and benefitting consumers.
“Now, after the implementation of this budget, the prices of these goods will go down, benefiting the common people,” Modi concluded, urging voters to trust the BJP to bring positive change to Delhi.
