Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid heartfelt tribute to former ISRO Chairman Dr. K. Kasturirangan, highlighting his immense contributions to India’s space program, science, and education. Speaking during the 121st episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi praised Kasturirangan’s leadership in taking ISRO to new heights and securing global recognition for India’s space initiatives.
“Under his leadership, ISRO gained a new identity. The space programs that progressed under his guidance brought global recognition to India’s efforts,” PM Modi said, noting that many satellites India relies on today were launched under Kasturirangan’s stewardship.
The Prime Minister also lauded the late scientist’s emphasis on innovation and continuous learning, calling it a source of inspiration for the younger generation. “Another remarkable aspect of his personality was the importance he gave to innovation and the vision of learning and doing something new,” he added.
PM Modi further recalled Kasturirangan’s pivotal role in shaping India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. “He played a big role in shaping the country’s new National Education Policy, bringing a forward-looking vision to education,” Modi noted.
Dr. Kasturirangan, who passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 84, had an illustrious career. A recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awards, he chaired ISRO from 1994 to 2003. During his nearly decade-long tenure, he oversaw the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), India’s most reliable satellite launch system.
Beyond space, he also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Planning Commission of India and directed the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru.
In a condolence message posted on X, PM Modi expressed deep grief over Kasturirangan’s passing, describing him as a leader whose vision propelled India’s space journey and inspired future generations. “His selfless service to the nation will always be remembered,” PM Modi said.
