Prime Minister Narendra Modi began the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi by paying heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Accompanied by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, PM Modi arrived at the National War Memorial to honor the fallen heroes.
Leading the ceremony, the Prime Minister laid a wreath at the memorial, paying homage to the nation’s courageous sons and daughters. Following the wreath-laying, Commander Amit Rathi, who was in charge of the Inter-Services Guard, commanded the Salami Shastra. This was followed by the Shok Shashtra, as the buglers played the ‘Last Post,’ signaling a moment of solemn reflection.
In this poignant moment, officers in uniform saluted, and the nation observed a two-minute silence to honor the departed soldiers. The silence was then broken by the sound of the ‘Rouse,’ marking the end of the tribute.
The ceremony concluded with the Guard Commander giving the command for Salami Shastra, paying a final salute to the fallen heroes.
After the solemn tribute, PM Modi and other dignitaries proceeded to the saluting dais to continue the Republic Day celebrations. Following tradition, the National Flag was unfurled, accompanied by the National Anthem, and a 21-gun salute was fired using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the Chief Guest, graced the occasion with his presence. The parade showcased vibrant tableaux from 16 state governments and Union Territories, as well as 10 ministries and departments of the Central government, all highlighting the theme ‘Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas’ (Golden India: Heritage and Development).
A special tribute will be paid by Mi-17 1V helicopters from the 129 Helicopter Unit, which will shower petals in the Dhwaj Formation. The helicopters will be led by Group Captain Alok Ahlawat, marking a moment of reverence and pride.
A contingent from Indonesia’s Military Academy, consisting of 152 members and 190 military band members, will participate in the parade for the first time, strengthening the bond between the two nations.
The ceremony will culminate with the National Anthem and the release of balloons carrying banners commemorating 75 years of the Constitution coming into effect, symbolizing India’s journey as a republic.
