On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude, highlighting the initiative’s evolution into a “people-powered” movement with widespread participation from diverse sections of society.
“Today, we celebrate 10 years of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao movement. Over the past decade, it has become a transformative, people-powered initiative that has brought people from all walks of life together,” PM Modi shared in a post on X.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the movement has played a key role in breaking gender barriers and biases, ensuring that every girl child has access to education and opportunities. “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao has been instrumental in overcoming gender biases while creating an environment where the girl child can pursue her education and achieve her dreams,” he said.
PM Modi expressed his appreciation for the collective efforts of individuals and community organizations in addressing the “historically low child sex ratios” in the country. “Thanks to the dedication of people and various community organizations, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao has achieved remarkable milestones. Districts with historically low child sex ratios have seen significant improvements, and awareness campaigns have instilled a deeper understanding of gender equality,” he noted.
The Prime Minister called for continued progress in protecting the rights of women and ensuring their education, stressing the importance of fostering a society where daughters can thrive without discrimination. “I commend all the stakeholders who have made this movement vibrant at the grassroots level. Let us continue to protect the rights of our daughters, ensure their education, and create a society where they can flourish without any discrimination. Together, we can ensure that the coming years bring even greater progress and opportunity for India’s daughters,” PM Modi added.
Launched on January 22, 2015, in Panipat, Haryana, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme marks its tenth year of implementation. The flagship initiative by the Government of India aims to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR), prevent gender-biased sex-selective elimination, and promote the survival, protection, and education of the girl child.
Over the years, the scheme has made significant strides in improving the lives of girls in India. It has helped improve the Sex Ratio at Birth, increased access to education, expanded healthcare, and supported women’s economic empowerment. Through collaborations with government bodies, NGOs, and local communities, the scheme has laid a strong foundation for valuing and protecting every girl child.
As the BBBP enters its second decade, the focus will shift to creating long-term changes through inclusive policies, better implementation, and active community participation. This will ensure continued progress toward gender equality and empowerment for future generations.
