On the 95th anniversary of the historic Dandi March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tribute to its participants, highlighting their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to the principles of truth and non-violence. In a post on X, PM Modi emphasized that the Dandi March, led by Mahatma Gandhi, ignited a nationwide movement for India’s self-reliance and independence, and continues to inspire generations.

“Today, we pay homage to all those who participated in the historic Dandi March, a defining chapter in India’s freedom struggle. The courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to truth and non-violence of all those who took part continue to inspire generations,” PM Modi said.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also commemorated the day, calling the Salt March a historic stand against colonial rule. “On this Dandi March Day, we honor Mahatma Gandhi’s fearless stand against colonial rule. His historic Salt March sparked a movement that strengthened India’s fight for freedom and self-reliance,” Joshi wrote on X.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid tribute, calling the Dandi March one of the strongest acts of resistance against British oppression. “On this day in 1930, Pujya Bapu started the Dandi March as a mark of protest against the oppressive salt tax. This brave act galvanized thousands and will always be remembered as one of the strongest stances against the oppressors,” Sarma posted.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge joined in the tributes, recalling the significance of the Salt Satyagraha in India’s fight for freedom. “Exactly 95 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi started the historic Dandi March and shook the foundations of British rule with a handful of salt. The nationwide movement of civil disobedience was an important step toward fulfilling the Indian National Congress’s pledge of ‘Purna Swaraj,'” Kharge said.

The Congress party also honored the Dandi March, emphasizing its role as a milestone in the Indian Freedom Movement, symbolizing the nation’s pursuit of self-reliance rooted in truth and non-violence.

The Dandi March, or Salt Satyagraha, was organized by Mahatma Gandhi from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat to the coastal village of Dandi, protesting the British-imposed salt tax. The movement began on March 12, 1930, and ended on April 5, 1930.
