Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday paid tribute to the legendary Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao, calling him the “best example of a good soldier” during the unveiling of his statue at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune.

Speaking at the event, Shah highlighted Bajirao’s exceptional military record and leadership, stating: “He has done incredible work for the country and for our independence… The best example of an individual who had the qualities of a good soldier was Peshwa Bajirao. In just 21 years, he fought 41 wars — a record that remains unbroken.”

Shah emphasized the strategic choice of location, noting that the NDA is a fitting place to honour Bajirao’s legacy, given his unparalleled contribution to military history.

The Home Minister also stressed the importance of Bajirao’s role in preserving India’s civilizational values: “If the legacy carried forward by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had not been continued by Peshwa Bajirao, the original character of the country would have been lost. He fought not just for territory but for Swaraj — self-rule.”

Shah urged the people of India to carry forward Bajirao’s vision, linking it to contemporary national achievements.

“It is the responsibility of 140 crore Indians to realise the dream that Peshwa Bajirao had for the nation. One of the best examples of this spirit today is Operation Sindoor.”

The Union Minister was welcomed at Pune airport by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the start of his two-day visit to the state. His itinerary includes high-level meetings, public addresses, and party organisational reviews.
