The Congress on Saturday intensified its attack on the BJP over alleged “vote theft,” with senior leader Pawan Khera accusing the ruling party of tampering with voter lists by fraudulently adding and removing names.
Khera claimed that the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process in Bihar exposed irregularities that would have otherwise remained hidden. He added that the issue was so serious that it prompted Supreme Court intervention and forced the Election Commission to accept Congress’s demands.
Speaking at a press conference, Khera said, “Yesterday we celebrated our 79th Independence Day, and tomorrow we begin our Vote Adhikar Yatra in Bihar. The right to vote is the foundation of our freedom. If we cannot vote, we cannot breathe freely in independent India. That is why Rahul Gandhi has started this struggle.”
He praised the people of Bihar, the Congress, and the INDIA bloc for raising their voices against what he described as a BJP-led conspiracy to manipulate electoral rolls.
“The BJP has been caught red-handed in adding and cutting votes fraudulently. Without the SIR, these irregularities would not have surfaced. The matter escalated to such an extent that even the Supreme Court had to intervene, and the Election Commission was compelled to act,” Khera added.
Earlier, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi amplified the party’s charge with a spoof video inspired by the film Laapataa Ladies, urging people to join the ‘Vote Chori se Azaadi’ campaign.
The clip, shared on X, depicts a man filing a police complaint about a stolen vote, with the message: “Theft of your vote is theft of your right.” Sharing the video, Gandhi wrote, “Chori chori, chupke chupke… ab aur nahi, janta jag gayi hai (Secretly, stealthily… No more now, the people are awake).”
