The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence is scheduled to meet on Monday afternoon at 3:00 PM at the Parliament House Annexe. The meeting gains significance following recent high-level consultations between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
This session follows a series of crucial developments in the wake of the deadly April 22 terror attack at Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 individuals, including a Nepalese national, were brutally killed at Baisaran meadow. The attack has been described as the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike.
The Defence Minister had earlier been briefed by Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan on strategic measures taken to counter Pakistan’s role in supporting terrorism. A three-day-old all-party meeting, chaired by Rajnath Singh, also addressed the broader security situation.
In response to the attack, NIA teams have been deployed at the site since April 23, intensifying evidence collection efforts, while the Indian Army remains on high alert, conducting widespread search operations to track down the perpetrators.
On April 23, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened to strongly condemn the attack, express condolences to the victims’ families, and review steps to tighten national security. During the CCS briefing, officials highlighted the cross-border linkages behind the attack, pointing to Pakistan-backed terror networks aiming to destabilize the region’s peace and growing economic prospects.
Additionally, in a bid to combat misinformation and hostile narratives, the Indian government banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels with a combined subscriber base of over 63 million for disseminating provocative and false content targeting India and its security forces in the aftermath of the Pahalgam incident.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee’s meeting is expected to discuss further strategic, diplomatic, and security measures to safeguard national interests amid ongoing regional tensions.
