In a dramatic twist to the mysterious death of Indore-based tourist Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, his father-in-law Devi Singh has claimed that his daughter Sonam Raghuvanshi is innocent and being falsely implicated. Singh accused the Meghalaya Police and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of fabricating evidence and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case.
Speaking to reporters in Indore, Singh said, “My daughter is innocent. She cannot kill her husband. The Meghalaya government has been lying from the start. She came to a dhaba in Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh) on her own and called her brother, after which police took her to the hospital. I haven’t even been allowed to speak to her.”
He strongly criticised the Meghalaya Police, asserting they are “making up stories” and “trying to trap Sonam.” Singh alleged that police officials from the northeastern state may have a role in the murder and warned that “if a CBI inquiry is initiated, officers from that police station will land in jail.”
Singh also targeted Chief Minister Conrad Sangma directly, claiming the CM was “lying” and should be subjected to a CBI probe as well. “I appeal to the government and the Union Home Minister to intervene and hand this case over to the CBI,” he said, reiterating that Raja and Sonam’s marriage was arranged and that the two did not know each other beforehand.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Police confirmed that Sonam Raghuvanshi was found near a roadside eatery on the Varanasi-Ghazipur road and has since been taken to a shelter home after a medical examination.
The murder case has garnered national attention since Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam went missing during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. Raja’s body was later recovered from a gorge near Cherrapunji on June 2.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had earlier announced the arrest of three assailants from Madhya Pradesh in connection with the case and stated that Sonam had surrendered. One more suspect remains at large, according to the police.
While Meghalaya DGP confirmed Sonam’s surrender, her family continues to maintain her innocence, alleging a conspiracy and demanding a thorough, impartial investigation by central authorities.
The family of the deceased, Raja Raghuvanshi, has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a CBI inquiry into the matter.
