Mumbai Police have issued a third notice to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, asking him to appear for questioning over his remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his latest stand-up video, Naya Bharat, uploaded on YouTube.
Officials confirmed on Wednesday that Kamra has been summoned to record his statement on April 5 after failing to respond to two previous notices.
“Mumbai Police have issued a third notice to Kunal Kamra to appear on April 5 and record his statement. He was called twice before for questioning but did not appear,” officials stated.
The investigation stems from allegations that Kamra not only mocked Eknath Shinde but also made satirical remarks about other prominent figures. Police have indicated that if further evidence emerges of Kamra targeting other politicians, actors, or sportspersons, additional action may be taken.
While Kamra’s lawyer has been in contact with the police, the comedian himself has yet to respond directly to officials.
Three separate cases have been registered against Kamra at the Khar Police Station, including complaints from the Mayor of Jalgaon city, a hotelier, and a businessman from Nashik.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court recently granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail until April 7 in connection with multiple FIRs filed against him. The comedian had sought transit anticipatory bail, citing threats following his controversial satirical remarks.
Kamra’s recent stand-up routine sparked a political row after he allegedly referred to Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor), drawing sharp criticism from political leaders who have called for action against him.
