World-renowned marathon runner Fauja Singh, affectionately known as the ‘Turbaned Tornado,’ passed away at the age of 114 following a tragic road accident in his ancestral village in Punjab’s Jalandhar district on Monday. His death has triggered a wave of grief and admiration from across the nation and beyond.

Singh, celebrated as the oldest marathon runner in history, defied age norms and inspired millions around the world. He first gained global attention in 2000 when he completed the London Marathon at the age of 89 — and went on to finish marathons in Toronto, New York, and several other cities well into his 100s.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed deep sorrow, calling Singh an “enduring symbol of resilience and hope.” He recalled walking alongside the centenarian during the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march in December 2024, where Singh’s energy uplifted the entire movement.

“Even at 114, he inspired generations with his strength and commitment. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those fighting for a healthier and drug-free Punjab,” Kataria stated.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh paid tribute on social media, writing, “His extraordinary life and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations.”

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit S. Cheema also remembered the centenarian athlete as a global icon. “He proved that age is no barrier. His life and legacy will continue to motivate generations,” Cheema posted.

Singh, often hailed as the ‘Sikh Superman,’ held multiple world records across various age categories and remained a symbol of endurance and vitality. His remarkable athletic journey, which began in his late 80s, made him a global ambassador for fitness, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the world, Fauja Singh leaves behind a legacy of unyielding determination and inspiration that transcends sport and age.
