On India’s 76th Republic Day, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge stressed the vital importance of protecting the Constitution and adhering to its principles. Speaking at the Republic Day celebration in Bengaluru, Kharge highlighted the significance of the Constitution in securing India’s respect and recognition on the global stage, attributing the nation’s achievements to its values and the leadership of figures like Dr. Ambedkar and Pandit Nehru.
Kharge, accompanied by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, unfurled the national flag at the event. “Protecting the Constitution and adhering to its principles is of utmost importance. It is because of the Constitution and its values that we have earned the respect and recognition we enjoy as a nation. The contributions of the Congress Party, Dr. Ambedkar, and Pandit Nehru have ensured the preservation of our independence,” Kharge said.
During his address, Kharge also took the opportunity to criticize Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of insulting the Constitution and its creators. He expressed concern over India’s slipping economic position, noting that the country has fallen from fourth to fifth place globally. He further questioned the government’s claims about strengthening the economy, citing the decline in India’s global rank.
“Key leaders, like Amit Shah, insult the Constitution and its architects. During my time in the Rajya Sabha, they mocked me for always mentioning Ambedkar, telling me that if I had mentioned God’s name, I would have reached heaven by now,” Kharge said. He also raised concerns about the current economic situation, comparing it to India’s status under the UPA government.
Kharge emphasized the need for collective action to protect the Constitution and invited the public to join him in this cause. He announced plans to visit Indore, where he will hold a meeting at Dr. Ambedkar’s birthplace to discuss the importance of safeguarding the Constitution. “We must all work together to protect our Constitution. With slogans like ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, and Jai Samvidhan,’ I urge everyone to contribute towards this cause,” Kharge urged.
As the nation celebrated its 76th Republic Day, people across India participated with great enthusiasm, immersing themselves in the spirit of patriotism. The day’s celebrations included a grand parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, showcasing the nation’s cultural diversity, unity, equality, development, and military strength.
President Droupadi Murmu led the national celebrations, with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attending as the Chief Guest. In line with the government’s ‘Jan Bhagidari’ (people’s participation) initiative, around 10,000 Special Guests from various walks of life were invited to witness the parade, which featured a tri-services tableau symbolizing jointness and integration between the armed forces. The tableau, themed “Shashakt aur Surakshit Bharat” (Empowered and Secure India), depicted a Joint Operations Room facilitating seamless communication among the three services.
The day’s festivities began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National War Memorial, where he paid solemn tribute to the fallen heroes by laying a wreath. The parade commenced at 10:30 AM, marking a vibrant and proud celebration of India’s democratic values and the Constitution.
