The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has drawn millions of devotees, all seeking to take a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. As of 8 AM on Tuesday, more than 4.55 million people, including 1 million Kalpawasis, have already participated in the ritual, according to the Uttar Pradesh Information Department.
Since the event’s start on January 13, over 147.6 million devotees have visited the Sangam to take the sacred dip. Several Union Ministers, including Rajnath Singh and Kiren Rijiju, have already visited and participated in the holy bath. On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also visited the Sangam for the holy dip, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Baba Ramdev, and other spiritual leaders.
The religious gathering has also attracted a large number of international visitors. Antonio, a pilgrim from Italy, expressed his joy at finally attending the Kumbh Mela after a decade-long dream. “I feel fantastic,” he said, reflecting on the blessings he felt at the event. His fascination with India’s spiritual heritage led him to embark on a 2,000-kilometer “pad-yatra,” deepening his connection to Indian saints.
Esther, a pilgrim from Spain, described her transformative experience at the Mela. Initially overwhelmed by the massive crowds, she later felt a sense of spiritual peace. “I’m feeling great right now,” she shared, capturing the essence of the Mela’s powerful energy.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is taking place in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26. Pilgrims travel to the Sangam to bathe in the sacred waters, believing it will absolve their sins and grant moksha (liberation).
The event is set to draw over 45 crore visitors, with key bathing dates including January 29 (Mauni Amavasya – Second Shahi Snan), February 3 (Basant Panchami – Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri). The Mela is poised to be a historic gathering for India.
