The Lok Sabha will conduct a special 16-hour discussion on Monday over Operation Sindoor—India’s decisive military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack claimed the lives of 26 civilians and triggered a series of precision strikes by Indian forces on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

According to the official List of Business for Monday, the session will include a “Special Discussion on India’s strong, successful and decisive ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.” A high-voltage debate is anticipated between members of the ruling NDA alliance and the Opposition parties.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to initiate the discussion in the Lok Sabha, with key inputs anticipated from Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and senior BJP MPs including Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to intervene during the debate in both Houses.

The Rajya Sabha will take up the debate on Tuesday, July 29, with participation expected from senior cabinet ministers, including Rajnath Singh and Jaishankar.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the Operation Sindoor debate will span 16 hours in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, scheduled across July 28 and 29, respectively. “We’ve assured the Opposition that Operation Sindoor will be discussed first. Other issues will be taken up afterward,” Rijiju told reporters.

Leaders from Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav and Rajiv Rai, and TDP MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi, are set to participate in the debate. The INDIA bloc floor leaders are expected to meet Monday morning to strategize for the week.

The debate is taking place amid Opposition demands for clarity on U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following the Operation Sindoor strikes. PM Modi’s presence during the debate had been requested by the Opposition; the discussion was scheduled this week following his return from a two-nation visit.

The first week of the Monsoon Session was marked by disruptions, including the surprise resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, further intensifying the political climate in Parliament.
