The Lok Sabha on Thursday adopted a statutory resolution confirming the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserting that the situation in the violence-hit state is “under control.”

“For the past four months, there has been no violence in Manipur… I will not say the situation is satisfactory, but it is under control,” Shah stated. He dismissed opposition demands for a no-confidence motion, claiming Congress lacked the numbers to push for one.

The resolution, moved by Shah, faced sharp criticism from opposition leaders for being taken up at 2 AM.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor questioned the late-night timing, arguing that Manipur’s crisis stems from “an erosion of public trust.” DMK MP Kanimozhi accused the government of disregarding the suffering of Manipuri citizens by delaying the debate.

“The opposition has repeatedly requested to raise the Manipur issue. But today, after 2 AM, you have chosen to discuss it. This shows how little regard you have for those suffering in Manipur,” Kanimozhi said.

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 under Article 356 of the Constitution, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The move came amid prolonged ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which began on May 3, 2023, after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM).

The unrest had prompted the central government to deploy paramilitary forces to control the situation.

After passing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 and Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill 2024, the Lok Sabha was adjourned to reconvene on April 3.
