The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 PM on Thursday, shortly after resuming its proceedings. Meanwhile, discussions in the Rajya Sabha continued after the House reconvened at 12 PM.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to make a statement in the Rajya Sabha at 2 PM regarding the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals who were allegedly living illegally in the United States.
Earlier in the day, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had been adjourned until 12 PM after a political uproar erupted over the deportation issue. Congress MPs Manickram Tagore, Gaurav Gogoi, and KC Venugopal had moved adjournment notices to discuss the matter, demanding a response from the government.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged MPs not to engage in “planned disruptions” that would hinder the House’s functioning. “This is a matter for the government and the Ministry of External Affairs, and concerns another country. The government has already taken cognizance of the issue. I request you not to resort to disruptions to prevent the smooth functioning of the House,” Speaker Birla said.
The disruptions came during the ongoing discussions on the Union Budget for 2025-2026, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday. The session began at 11 AM but was adjourned shortly after due to the uproar.
The issue at hand concerns the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals, with a U.S. Air Force plane bringing these individuals back to Amritsar, Punjab, on Wednesday.
The ongoing Budget session of Parliament has already faced interruptions, including heavy objections raised during Rahul Gandhi’s speech on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. Additionally, the Opposition has called for a discussion on the Mahakumbh stampede tragedy.
The Budget session of Parliament began on January 31 with an inaugural address by President Droupadi Murmu. The first phase of the session will run until February 13, after which the session will reconvene on March 10 and continue until April 4.
