The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the third time on Monday, now till 2 PM, as persistent sloganeering by Opposition MPs disrupted proceedings once again during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The House had reconvened at 1 PM after a second adjournment, but Speaker Om Birla suspended proceedings shortly thereafter, expressing frustration over the continued disruptions.
The Lok Sabha was expected to begin a special 16-hour discussion on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, but protests by Opposition members over the voter list revision (SIR) in Bihar stalled the debate.
Speaker Birla reminded MPs of the all-party meeting held last Friday, during which the Opposition had requested that Operation Sindoor be discussed.
“You asked for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, and I gave assurance — the government agreed too. Now I request again — let the House run and allow the discussion to take place,” Birla said sternly.
He also asked Opposition parties to clarify their priorities. “Are you here to discuss Bihar SIR or Operation Sindoor? You must give a commitment before you demand further debates,” he added, addressing Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and urging that party representatives attending meetings should be authorized decision-makers.
Earlier in the day, Birla had similarly rebuked Opposition members:
“You enter the Well of the House after demanding debate on Operation Sindoor. Do you want to participate or should I adjourn again?”
Meanwhile, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed to the Opposition to refrain from political point-scoring on sensitive national security matters.
“Do not speak the language of Pakistan. Let us maintain the dignity of our armed forces,” Rijiju said.
The discussion on Operation Sindoor — a retaliatory strike targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam — remains pending amid repeated disruptions.
Later in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Kiren Rijiju met with Speaker Om Birla in his chambers after the latest adjournment.
