Security forces continued their counter-terror operation in the Akhal Devsar area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday. So far, one terrorist has been neutralised in the joint operation being carried out by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and Special Operations Group (SOG).

According to the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army, intense and intermittent gunfire was exchanged overnight, with troops maintaining a tight cordon around the area. “OP AKHAL, Kulgam. Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact,” said a post by the Chinar Corps on X.

The operation is still ongoing as security personnel comb the area for any remaining threats.

This is the latest in a series of successful anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir over the past week:

  • On July 30, in the Poonch sector, the Army’s White Knight Corps neutralised two terrorists attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control (LoC). Three weapons were recovered in the operation.
The Army credited the success to effective coordination with Jammu and Kashmir Police and intelligence units.
  • A day earlier, on July 29, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha about the elimination of three top Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives during Operation Mahadev in Srinagar’s Harwan area, near Dachigam National Park.

Among those killed was Suleman alias Faizal, an A-category Lashkar commander involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, along with Afghan and Jibran, also high-ranking militants responsible for the killing of civilians in Baisaran Valley.

The recent string of coordinated operations highlights the intensified counter-terror efforts underway in the Union Territory. With security forces maintaining high alert and pressure on terror networks, authorities continue to reiterate their resolve to root out terrorism from the region.
