Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed his delight at participating in the celebrations marking the 90th birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama in Dharamshala on Saturday. He joined thousands of devotees from around the world who have gathered to honour the revered leader.

“I’m glad to be part of this momentous occasion. Today, prayers were held for His Holiness’s long life, and the main birthday celebration will be held tomorrow,” Rijiju told ANI.

The official birthday, as per the Gregorian calendar, falls on July 6. Celebrations are being held with immense devotion and joy by Tibetan communities and supporters across the region.

Alongside Rijiju, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Hollywood actor Richard Gere also attended the event, highlighting the Dalai Lama’s wide global influence and the deep reverence he commands.

Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama reiterated that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust, established by him, holds the sole authority to identify his reincarnation—dismissing any external interference, particularly from China.

In his statement, the Dalai Lama emphasized that recognition of his successor must follow established Tibetan traditions in consultation with religious heads and Dharma Protectors.

Rijiju echoed these sentiments, saying, “I am a devotee of the Dalai Lama. His successor must be chosen by him alone. This is what every follower around the world believes.”

The celebrations mark not just a personal milestone for the Dalai Lama, but a moment of spiritual unity and a strong affirmation of Tibet’s religious autonomy and cultural identity.
