Senior Supreme Court Advocate and BJP leader Nalin Kohli has called for transparency and accountability in the controversy surrounding Justice Yashwant Varma, after a fire at the judge’s residence led to the discovery of a large amount of cash.
Expressing concern over the serious allegations, Kohli emphasized that corruption in any form cannot be tolerated, as it erodes public trust in institutions. However, he also cautioned against using one incident to discredit the entire judiciary.
Speaking to ANI, Kohli remarked, “The presence of cash at a sitting judge’s residence raises grave concerns. This matter demands an explanation, and a thorough probe is necessary to uphold the credibility of the judiciary.” He also questioned the disappearance of the cash after its initial discovery, noting that a Delhi High Court official later found no money at the site, raising further suspicion.
The Supreme Court has formed an inquiry committee comprising two sitting Chief Justices of High Courts to investigate the matter. Justice Varma, who has denied the allegations, stated that the room where the cash was allegedly found was an outhouse and not the main residence. He has claimed that the incident is a conspiracy to malign him.
With the Delhi High Court Chief Justice calling for a deeper probe, Kohli stressed that the truth must emerge swiftly, adding, “Corruption acts as a termite that weakens institutions, and those involved in illicit transactions must be held accountable.”
The Supreme Court continues to monitor the case, as questions over judicial integrity and transparency remain at the forefront.
