In response to the shock and outrage following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir’s Legislative Assembly convened a special session on Monday to express condolences for the victims and to collectively condemn the heinous act. The attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, has deeply affected the nation and spurred widespread condemnation.

The session saw the participation of key political leaders including Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, Independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid, AAP J&K President Mehraj Malik, National Conference leader Mubarak Gul, and others. They gathered to stand in unity against terrorism and reaffirm support for the Union Government’s efforts to combat such violence.

Leader of the Opposition Sharma stated that the agenda for the session was to convey condolences for the victims, who were primarily tourists, and to unite in opposition to terrorism. “Today, there will be no political or divisive discussions. This session is meant to provide strength and support to the Union Government in its fight against terrorism,” Sharma said.

Awami Ittehad Party leader Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh called for peace talks with Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in resolving the ongoing conflict. He also proposed the creation of a memorial for Adil, a local pony handler who sacrificed his life during the attack.

AAP MLA Mehraj Malik echoed similar sentiments, urging the government to take decisive action against Pakistan in response to the attack. He stressed the importance of demonstrating strength before engaging in any future dialogue.

This attack marks one of the deadliest incidents in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack. The session underscored the commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to stand united in the face of terrorism and support efforts to ensure justice for the victims.
