Indian Railways will celebrate a major milestone on February 3, marking 100 years since the launch of electrification in the country, a significant step toward a more sustainable rail network. Swapnil Nila, Central Public Relations Officer, shared details about the celebrations and its historical importance.
The first electric train in India began its journey from platform 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) to Kurla in Mumbai on February 3, 1925. This was just 72 years after the debut of India’s first-ever train service on April 16, 1853.
“The first electric train ran between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (then Victoria Terminus) and Kurla. It was an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train, marking a major shift toward a greener and more sustainable future. This was a pioneering move, and now, 100 years later, both Central Railway and Indian Railways are celebrating the completion of electrification,” Nila explained to ANI.
As part of the centenary celebrations, Central Railway has also achieved a major milestone by completing 100% electrification of its network. “Central Railway has completed full electrification, and we are marking this achievement with events starting from February 3,” Nila added.
A variety of events are planned to commemorate the centenary, including a run, seminars, and 3D light projections. “The celebrations will kick off with a morning run, followed by a ceremonial commemoration and technical seminars at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. We will also feature 3D projections and other events throughout the day,” Nila said.
In addition to these activities, Central Railways has organized sessions for school children to educate them about the rich history and heritage of Indian Railways.
