The Indian Army has delivered a proportionate response to unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC) during the night of May 7 and 8, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the Indian Army, Pakistani forces initiated small arms and artillery gunfire targeting areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. “The Indian Army responded proportionately,” the official statement said.

These ceasefire violations come in the wake of Operation Sindoor, India’s precision strike campaign that targeted nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians.

In addition to military posts, Pakistan’s artillery fire hit civilian areas in Poonch and Tangdhar, resulting in 15 civilian deaths and injuries to at least 43 others. Villages along the border were thrown into panic, with shelling damaging homes, shattering windows, and cracking walls.

“Pakistan’s targeting of innocent civilians is completely wrong and inhumane,” Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, condemning the shelling. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

The Indian Army continues to monitor the situation closely and has vowed to respond appropriately to any further ceasefire violations.
