Congress leader Alka Lamba extended her congratulations to Rekha Gupta, Delhi’s newly appointed Chief Minister, while reminiscing about their past political rivalry.

“My heartfelt greetings to Rekha Gupta, the new Chief Minister of Delhi,” Lamba said on Thursday. “Her name announcement took me back to our ideological battles. One of the main concerns in Delhi has always been the safety of women. I hope Rekha Gupta addresses this issue effectively. If she works towards ensuring women’s safety, she will have our support,” Lamba added.

Earlier this week, Lamba shared a nostalgic photo from 1995, recalling their time at Delhi University. In the image, Lamba had won the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) President position from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), while Gupta secured the post of General Secretary from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Lamba wrote, “A memorable moment from 1995 – when Rekha Gupta and I took oath together. I became DUSU President from NSUI, and Rekha was elected as General Secretary from ABVP. Congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta on her new role.”

She further expressed her hopes for Delhi’s future, stating, “Congratulations to Delhi for having its fourth woman Chief Minister. We look forward to a cleaner Yamuna and safer streets for our daughters.”

Rekha Gupta took the oath of office as Delhi’s Chief Minister during a ceremony at Ramlila Maidan, with six other ministers, including Parvesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh, also assuming office.

Gupta is the fourth woman to hold the Chief Minister’s position in Delhi, following in the footsteps of women leaders from BJP, Congress, and AAP. She succeeds Atishi in the role.

Elected MLA from Shalimar Bagh, Rekha Gupta has served as the general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi and as a member of the party’s national executive. She has been instrumental in several campaigns focused on the welfare of marginalized communities and women.

The BJP is forming a government in Delhi after 27 years, securing 48 out of 70 seats in the recent assembly polls. In contrast, the AAP won 22 seats, and Congress failed to make any significant impact in the third consecutive election.
