Union Minister and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, on Monday announced that the Narendra Modi-led government is fully prepared to hold a comprehensive discussion on Operation Sindoor, calling it an unprecedented military action since independence.
Addressing the Upper House, Nadda emphasized that the government is not avoiding debate on the Pahalgam terror attack or Operation Sindoor. “Such an operation has never happened since independence,” he noted, reiterating that the government had already agreed during the Business Advisory Committee meeting to take up the matter for discussion.
Nadda’s remarks came in response to Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, who invoked Rule 267 to demand a detailed debate on the recent Pahalgam terror incident and the government’s military response under Operation Sindoor. Kharge expressed concern that despite the Opposition’s unconditional support, they were not kept in the loop.
“The perpetrators have not been caught or neutralised. The Lieutenant Governor has spoken about an intelligence failure. If this is the case, Parliament and the public must be informed,” Kharge said, also referencing past statements by former US President Donald Trump claiming to have brokered ceasefire talks.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed that he had accepted a motion for a full debate on Operation Sindoor and noted that 18 notices had been received under Rule 267, covering various issues including electoral roll revisions in Bihar, trade agreements, and the Keeladi archaeological report.
Despite multiple notices, Dhankhar called on Kharge to speak, signalling the start of a significant debate on national security and transparency.
The Monsoon Session began on Monday amid high political tensions, with the government asserting it is willing to engage on all matters of national importance, including the sensitive India-Pakistan ceasefire claims. Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till noon due to opposition sloganeering.
