Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and five of his associates have been booked for culpable homicide after a 55-year-old man, Cheeli Singaiah, was fatally run over during a political rally in Guntur on June 18.

The Guntur police confirmed that the vehicle involved in the accident was part of Jagan’s convoy, prompting them to upgrade the case from Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 49 (act endangering human life or personal safety of others).

According to the police, the incident occurred near the Anjaneya Swamy statue on the Etukuru Bypass, under the Nallapadu Police Station limits, while Jagan’s authorised convoy was en route from Tadepalli to Sattenapalli.

“After examining CCTV footage, drone visuals, video recordings, and eyewitness statements, it was confirmed that the victim was run over by the vehicle carrying the former Chief Minister,” the police said.

The victim, Cheeli Singaiah, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. A complaint filed by his wife, Cheeli Lurdhu Mary, led to the initial case registration.

Six people were present in the vehicle at the time of the incident:

  • YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Former CM
  • Ramana Reddy, driver
  • K. Nageshwar Reddy, Personal Assistant
  • Y.V. Subba Reddy, Former MP
  • Perni Venkateswara Rao (Nani), Former MLA
  • Vidadala Rajini, Former Minister

Police confirmed that only three vehicles were authorised as part of Jagan’s convoy and are continuing their investigation into the exact sequence of events.
