Avinash Chandra, Director General of Fire Services, addressed the recent fire incident at Mahakumbh on Sunday, emphasizing the robust safety measures in place and the ongoing investigation into the mishap.
Chandra clarified that the police and local authorities are handling the case and urged the public to disregard rumors until the investigation determines the exact cause. “The police have the authority to investigate this incident. Local authorities are actively working on it. While there are rumors, the exact reason will be revealed only after a thorough investigation,” he said.
Highlighting the extensive fire safety arrangements at Mahakumbh, Chandra provided an overview of the measures implemented to handle emergencies in the massive congregation. “In the entire Kumbh area, fire safety has been given the highest priority. We have established 53 fire stations and 20 fire posts, with over 1,300 fire personnel deployed. Additionally, more than 300 fire vehicles have been stationed. Compared to Prayagraj district, which has nine fire stations and 175 personnel, Mahakumbh has been significantly reinforced to match its scale and requirements,” he noted.
Chandra explained that each fire station in the Kumbh area covers an area of approximately 800 square meters, ensuring quick access to incidents. “The response time for fire emergencies is about three minutes, with vehicles reaching the location within three to four minutes. This robust setup ensures devotees can visit without concerns about safety,” he added.
The fire, caused by the explosion of three cooking gas cylinders, broke out on Sunday. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site, inspecting the damage and holding discussions with officials and firefighting teams.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took cognizance of the incident, speaking with Chief Minister Adityanath to assess the situation and ensure necessary measures are in place.
Chandra reassured the public of the state’s commitment to ensuring safety at the Mahakumbh, urging devotees to participate without worry. “We will continue to strengthen fire and police arrangements to provide a secure environment for everyone,” he said.
