Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday slammed Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), asserting that the Pakistani leader should “stay within his limits.”
Responding to Sharif’s claims against India, Shinde told ANI, “A jackal doesn’t become a lion by wearing a lion’s skin. He should stay within his limits.”
Sharif, during his UNGA address, accused India of politicising the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and alleged that Indian forces targeted civilians. He further claimed Pakistan repelled Indian aggression with “stunning professionalism,” even asserting that seven Indian fighter jets were shot down.
However, India categorically rejected Sharif’s statements as false and misleading. New Delhi clarified that its May 7 Operation Sindoor was a calibrated response to the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. The operation targeted nine terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), striking facilities linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. Over 100 terrorists were eliminated.
Indian officials stressed that the strikes were precise, limited, and aimed only at terror infrastructure. Evidence, including satellite images, was presented in a series of press briefings by top military leaders and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri between May 7 and May 10. India also reaffirmed that it avoided targeting Pakistani military installations to prevent escalation.
The conflict de-escalated after India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10, following four days of intense drone and missile exchanges. International observers have since backed India’s right to act in self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
