External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered the opening address at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on Thursday in Odisha, underscoring the vital role of the Indian diaspora in nation-building. He highlighted the government’s initiatives to support overseas Indians and emphasized the diaspora’s potential to bring developmental opportunities to India.
Diaspora as a Pillar of Nation-Building
Describing the event as a “family reunion,” Jaishankar remarked, “Indians living abroad can see and experience the progress and development taking place in their country.” He added that the success of the diaspora brings pride to Indians worldwide.
“In a globalized era, the diaspora becomes increasingly significant. Whether through technology, best practices, resources, tourism, trade, or investment, the two-way flows they enable are invaluable,” he said, stressing their importance in fostering India’s global ties.
Government Initiatives for the Diaspora
Jaishankar outlined several steps taken by the government to enhance support for the diaspora, including:
-Simplification of passport issuance and renewals.
– Improved consular services.
– Increased welfare measures.
– Effective grievance platforms.
He assured, “In times of difficulties, you can be confident that the Modi Sarkar has your back.”
Odisha’s Significance in India’s Global Vision
Highlighting Odisha’s external influence, Jaishankar linked the state’s rich heritage to India’s global strategies. “Hosting PBD in Odisha reflects Modi Sarkar’s Purvodaya policy. The famous Bali Yatra is a precursor to what is today’s Act East policy. When we define ourselves as an Indo-Pacific nation, we do so from the eastern seaboard of Odisha,” he explained.
He encouraged the diaspora to embrace and promote India’s heritage, traditions, and identity while contributing to the nation’s development.
A Confident and Modern Bharat
Despite global challenges, Jaishankar conveyed a message of confidence in India’s trajectory: “The message from this convention is of a Bharat that is more confident, modernizing, and inclusive. A nation where tradition and technology coexist, and the journey towards Viksit Bharat continues. Each of you, in your own way, can contribute to achieving this goal.”
