Delhi Govt Cracks Down on Dummy Schooling; 10 Schools Face Action, De-Recognition Process Begins

In a decisive move to tackle the growing issue of dummy schooling and ensure accountability in private education, the Delhi government has launched a large-scale inspection drive across several schools. Under the supervision of the District Magistrate (DM), notices have been issued to 10 schools found violating educational norms, and the process for de-recognising serious offenders has been initiated, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The inspection teams included senior academicians and officials from the Directorate of Education, working in coordination with the DM. This crackdown follows the identification of at least 20 schools suspected of running dummy admissions — a practice where students are enrolled only on paper and do not attend classes, often to pursue private coaching for competitive exams.

The government’s action also aligns with increasing concerns about the neglect of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students, who are entitled to quality education under the Right to Education Act.

This development comes a day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered strict action against private schools accused of arbitrary fee hikes. The issue surfaced during a public grievance session (Jan Samvaad) at the CM’s residence, where distressed parents raised concerns about fee increases and school pressure tactics.

One of the cases involved Queen Mary School in Model Town. Responding swiftly, CM Gupta directed the Education Department to investigate and take action against errant schools.

“It is completely unacceptable for any school to mentally harass parents or students, threaten expulsion, or increase fees without following due process,” said CM Gupta. She emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of students and parents, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds.

“Rules and regulations exist for a reason. Schools that violate them will face strict consequences. We have issued notices to all schools against whom complaints have been received,” she added.

Chief Minister Gupta reiterated that the Delhi Government will not allow any compromise on a child’s future and warned that institutions found guilty of malpractice will be held fully accountable.
