Early trends from the Election Commission of India indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in two key constituencies in the Delhi Assembly election results. BJP candidate Om Prakash Sharma is currently ahead in Vishwas Nagar with a margin of 1,741 votes. In Shahdara, BJP’s Sanjay Goyal is leading with a smaller margin of 506 votes.

Along with the Delhi results, the vote counting is also underway for by-elections in Uttar Pradesh’s Milkipur seat and Tamil Nadu’s Erode seat.

The total voter turnout in the Delhi assembly elections held on February 5 was recorded at 60.54%. Tight security measures have been implemented at all counting centers.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seeking a third consecutive term, while the BJP is aiming to reclaim power in the National Capital after more than two decades.

In the New Delhi constituency, Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit stated he was unaware of any potential post-poll alliance between his party and AAP. He emphasized that such decisions are left to the party high command. “I have no idea about the alliance. It is the decision of the high command. Let the counting of votes happen,” he said.

Exit polls released earlier in the week suggested that the BJP held an edge over AAP. However, AAP leaders have expressed confidence, claiming that exit polls have historically underestimated their performance, and they remain optimistic about returning to power.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP campaign targeted AAP over issues like the alleged pollution in the Yamuna River and the renovation of Arvind Kejriwal’s residence as Chief Minister. Modi also used terms like “Aapda” and “Sheesh Mahal” to criticize Kejriwal’s administration.

On the other hand, AAP has focused on its achievements, particularly in the education sector, during its tenure. Kejriwal has claimed that if BJP comes to power, they would end free education for the people.

Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also campaigned, targeting Kejriwal and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia for their alleged involvement in the Delhi excise policy “scam” case.

Key constituencies in the capital include New Delhi, where former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is contesting against Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit and BJP’s Parvesh Verma. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is facing BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress candidate Alka Lamba.

The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, has faced setbacks in the last two elections, failing to win any seats. AAP has dominated the past two assemblies, but BJP is looking to break the trend and return to power in the National Capital after more than two decades.
