Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday launched the second phase of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, announcing an ambitious target of planting 70 lakh trees across the national capital this season to boost environmental protection and public participation.
Speaking at the event in New Delhi, CM Gupta expressed satisfaction over the growing involvement of Delhi’s departments, schools, and citizens in the campaign. She called upon individuals and social organisations to plant at least one tree in the name of Mother Nature and Earth, aiming to transform Delhi into a greener and healthier city.
“I am happy to see all government departments and schools joining the campaign. We urge every citizen to plant a tree for our Mother Earth. Our goal is to plant 70 lakh saplings this season to improve Delhi’s environment,” she said while addressing reporters.
The campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national initiative, promotes environmental consciousness and personal dedication to nature. Sharing a glimpse of her participation on social media, CM Gupta revealed that she planted a vermilion (sindoor) tree in memory of her mother.
“The sindoor made from this plant’s flowers symbolizes the honour, valour, and self-confidence of Indian women,” she wrote on X, adding that the tree would also serve as a tribute to ‘Operation Sindoor’ and Delhi’s commitment to greenery, cleanliness, and compassion. She was joined by cabinet colleague Ashish Sood during the event.
In her address, Gupta also took a swipe at the previous Aam Aadmi Party-led government, accusing it of rejecting beneficial central schemes simply because they carried the Union Government’s name.
“The former government had issues with anything linked to the Centre. Be it Ayushman Yojana, PM Awas Yojana, or even a simple campaign like ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, they refused to accept or implement them. What was the harm in planting a tree in the name of Mother Nature?” she questioned.
The campaign aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility while countering the neglect Gupta alleged was shown by the earlier administration. With the 70 lakh tree plantation target in sight, her government seeks to leave a lasting green legacy for future generations.
