India is commemorating the diamond jubilee of its victory in the 1965 India-Pakistan War, with the armed forces observing “60 Years of Victory” throughout September. Marking the occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday paid heartfelt tributes to veterans and martyrs at an event held at South Block, New Delhi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Singh saluted the courage and sacrifice of soldiers who ensured India’s triumph six decades ago. “Pakistan thought it could intimidate us with infiltration, guerrilla tactics, and surprise attacks. But every Indian soldier serves with the resolve that the nation’s sovereignty and integrity will never be compromised,” he said. He highlighted historic battles of the war, including Asal Uttar, Chawinda, and Phillora, while recalling the heroism of Param Vir Chakra awardee Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid, who destroyed several enemy tanks before laying down his life in the Battle of Asal Uttar.

Veterans in attendance also shared vivid recollections of the fierce fighting in 1965. Colonel H.C. Sharma (Retd.) of the 13 Punjab Regiment recounted the capture of Dograi, a fortified Pakistani stronghold near Lahore. Despite heavy enemy fire, his unit, supported by tanks, seized the town along with captured enemy equipment.

Honorary Captain Jagdhir Singh (Retd.) of the 52 Mountain Regiment described operations in the Tithwal sector, where Indian forces destroyed a key suspension bridge over the Kishanganga River, cutting off Pakistani supply lines. His regiment also supported assaults that captured Sanjoi and Mirpur posts, earning a commendation from the Army Chief.

Major Sudarshan Singh (Retd.) of the 1 Dogra Regiment recalled how Indian troops turned the tide against Pakistani armour by breaching a canal to flood terrain near Harwar, trapping enemy tanks before destroying them with artillery fire.

The Defence Minister interacted with these veterans and families of fallen soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifices as the foundation of India’s military strength. “The unmatched bravery and patriotism displayed in 1965 continues to inspire every generation of our armed forces,” Singh said.

The commemoration underscores India’s enduring respect for its war heroes and the legacy of resilience that defined the 1965 conflict.
