Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the situation in Ladakh, saying arrests alone will not resolve the crisis and that fulfilling promises is the only solution.

“The only solution is to fulfil the promises made by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, which is to give statehood to Ladakh as well as J&K. Arresting someone is not the solution. You have been unable to handle Manipur for the last two years. Now, you let things go out of hand in Ladakh, which is the most sensitive area. Suppression won’t help; only talks will,” Tiwari told ANI.

Tensions erupted in Leh after violent protests on September 24, leading to restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and heavy deployment of security forces. Locals reported difficulty in carrying out daily activities, including purchasing basic necessities like food and milk.

The unrest followed protests demanding statehood for Ladakh, which turned violent, resulting in the BJP office being set on fire. In the aftermath, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) and lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail, accused of “inciting violence.” Wangchuk had been advocating for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which provides for autonomous district councils with legislative and judicial powers.

Authorities continue to enforce strict restrictions in Leh, banning gatherings of five or more people and prohibiting rallies or marches without prior approval. Security personnel remain deployed to maintain order.
