On the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Congress Party moved strong motions in both Houses, seeking urgent discussions on national security lapses, Operation Sindoor, and controversial remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Congress Lok Sabha whip Manickam Tagore submitted an Adjournment Motion Notice to Speaker Om Birla, demanding suspension of regular business to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, alleged security and intelligence failures, and the Centre’s handling of foreign policy post-Operation Sindoor.

In his notice, Tagore flagged several pressing concerns:

  1. The Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, exposing severe security lapses.
  2. The government’s lack of strategic narrative following Operation Sindoor, despite the military’s courageous action.
  3. Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated claims—including 24 public statements—suggesting he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan under trade pressure.
  4. A recent claim by Trump that five Indian fighter jets were shot down, a statement that has neither been confirmed nor rebutted by the Government of India.
  5. The Prime Minister’s silence on the matter, which Tagore alleged is damaging India’s diplomatic standing and eroding public trust.
  6. Disclosures about Operation Sindoor made abroad by the Chief of Defence Staff, bypassing Parliament, raising questions about accountability.

“In view of the seriousness of these national security issues and their impact on India’s international image, I request that all other business be suspended,” Tagore urged in his written submission.

Simultaneously, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala submitted a Suspension of Business Notice under Rule 267, seeking to halt all scheduled proceedings in the Upper House to allow discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

Surjewala wrote to the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha, stating, “That this House suspend Zero Hour and the relevant rules pertaining to Question Hour and other businesses of the day to discuss the concerns arising out of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s response through Operation Sindoor.”

These motions set the stage for a potentially stormy Monsoon Session, with the Opposition INDIA bloc ready to challenge the Centre on a range of issues, including the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the AI 171 crash.

The session, scheduled to run until August 21 with a recess between August 12 and 18, will comprise 21 sittings over 32 days.
