The Delhi Police on Friday detained a close associate of Rajesh Khimji, the prime accused in the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, officials said. The detained individual allegedly transferred money to Khimji, raising suspicions of a wider conspiracy.

Investigators are also tracking at least ten people who were in regular contact with the accused through calls and online chats. One of these suspects is expected to be brought to Delhi by Friday evening. Meanwhile, police are recording statements of five others in Rajkot whose data was found on Khimji’s mobile phone.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Khimji, a resident of Rajkot, allegedly attacked CM Rekha Gupta during a Jan Sunvai at her Civil Lines residence. He has since been remanded to five days of police custody for further interrogation.

Following the assault, CM Gupta reaffirmed her commitment to public service, declaring that “unexpected blows” would not deter her. In a post on X, she said women possess “double the strength” to overcome challenges and announced that public hearings would now be held across all assembly constituencies in Delhi, in addition to her residence.

Delhi Police, in coordination with Rajkot Police and central agencies including the Intelligence Bureau (IB), is probing the case from all angles.

In the wake of the attack, CM Rekha Gupta has been provided Z-category security by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Personnel took over her protection on Thursday morning, with additional deployment around her residence and office to ensure round-the-clock security.
