In a transformative move for pilgrimage and tourism, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the ambitious Kedarnath ropeway project. Spanning 12.9 km from Sonprayag to Kedarnath, the project will be built with an investment of Rs 4,081 crore.

The ropeway, developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, will feature advanced Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, capable of carrying 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction — accommodating up to 18,000 pilgrims daily. Once completed, the journey to Kedarnath, which currently takes 8-9 hours by foot, ponies, or palanquins, will be reduced to a swift and comfortable 36-minute ride.

Besides offering a safe and eco-friendly travel option, the project is expected to create significant employment opportunities during both construction and operation. It will also boost allied industries such as hospitality, travel, and food services.

The ropeway marks a major step in enhancing last-mile connectivity in Uttarakhand’s hilly terrain, easing the challenging 16-km uphill trek from Gaurikund to the Kedarnath temple. Situated at an altitude of 3,583 m in Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas, drawing around 20 lakh pilgrims annually during the temple’s open season from April to November.

With the promise of all-weather connectivity and a comfortable journey, this project is set to transform the pilgrimage experience while fostering socio-economic growth in the region.
