The general discussion on the Union Budget for 2025-2026, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, will take place in both Houses of Parliament on Thursday. The discussions will begin at 11 AM today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to respond to the debate on President Droupadi Murmu’s address in the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha session will begin with the Question Hour, followed by the laying of Parliamentary Papers by various ministries.
Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar (Housing and Urban Affairs), Shripad Yesso Naik (Power), Shobha Karandlaje (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), Ajay Tamta (Road Transport and Highways), Murlidhar Mohol (Civil Aviation), Ravneet Singh Bittu (Food Processing Industries), and Tokhan Sahu (Housing and Urban Affairs) will present their respective papers on the table during the session.
In addition, Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi has moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals by the United States. He described the deportations as being carried out “under conditions that are deeply distressing and humiliating.” His motion emphasizes the need to address the issue urgently to prevent further dehumanization of Indians abroad and protect their dignity.
Congress whip Manickam Tagore has also filed a motion, calling for a discussion on the “inhumane deportation of Indian nationals” and urging necessary steps to prevent such mistreatment.
A new Income Tax Bill, set to replace the Income Tax Act of 1961, is expected to be introduced in Parliament today.
The session has already experienced disruptions, including objections raised during Rahul Gandhi’s speech on Monday about the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. Opposition members have also called for a discussion on the recent Mahakumbh stampede tragedy.
On Tuesday, PM Modi responded to the Motion of Thanks on President Murmu’s address, highlighting the development initiatives undertaken by the BJP-led government and their efforts to improve the lives of the poor.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had tabled the Economic Survey for 2024-25 on January 31, forecasting a 6.4% growth in India’s GDP for FY2025.
The Budget session of Parliament commenced on January 31, with President Droupadi Murmu delivering the inaugural address. The first part of the session will run until February 13, with a break before the session reconvenes on March 10 and continues until April 4.
