Purnia MP Pappu Yadav on Tuesday visited the family members of five people who were allegedly burnt alive over witchcraft allegations in Bihar’s Purnia district. Calling the incident a “black spot for the country,” Yadav condemned the tragedy and blamed deep-rooted superstition and governance failure for the horrific act.

Speaking to ANI, Yadav said, “This is a black spot for the country… Our MPs and MLAs are busy with religious rituals, yet they won’t speak out against the one ‘Baba’ promoting black magic.”

He questioned the collapse of governance in Bihar, citing rising deaths and unchecked superstition.

“35,000 people died in a year… Who is responsible? Why are most MPs and MLAs busy with contracts instead of governance? Bihar is heading towards total collapse,” he said.

Yadav also asserted that such a heinous crime couldn’t have been carried out by poor villagers alone, suggesting manipulation by a local exorcist.

“An exorcist outside the village spread the belief that a woman was a witch and had harmed a child. This tragedy happened because of that superstition. The tribal community doesn’t follow such practices—this happened solely due to blind faith.”

Bihar Minister Leshi Singh confirmed police action in the case, stating, “This happened due to superstition. The police are acting swiftly. Three people, including a minor, have been arrested.”

The shocking incident took place on July 6 in Titgaon village, where five members of a family were allegedly burned alive by villagers following accusations of witchcraft. Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have assured strict action against the culprits.
