As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears set to make a remarkable comeback in Delhi after 27 years, party candidate Parvesh Verma, who is leading in the New Delhi constituency, is on track to defeat Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal. Verma, accompanied by a jubilant crowd of BJP supporters, raised the party flag and a placard of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, celebrating the victory.
Speaking to the media, Verma attributed the BJP’s success to the leadership of PM Modi. “This government that will be formed in Delhi will bring PM Modi’s vision to the capital. I credit this victory to PM Modi, and I thank the people of Delhi. This is the victory of PM Modi and the people of Delhi,” he said.
At the time of writing, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is trailing Verma by a margin of 4,099 votes. According to the latest trends, the BJP is leading in 48 seats, with 5 wins and 43 leads, while AAP is ahead in 27 seats, having won 6 and leading in 21. Congress has once again failed to secure any seats in the Delhi Assembly elections for the third consecutive time.
In the early results, the BJP has won three seats, with Rekha Gupta winning from Shalimar Bagh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa from Rajouri Garden, and Chandan Kumar Choudhary from Sangam Vihar and Tilak Ram Gupta from Tri Nagar. AAP has secured victories in two seats, with Virender Singh Kadian winning from Delhi Cantt and Kuldeep Kumar from Kondli.
In another development, AAP leader Manish Sisodia conceded defeat in his constituency, Jangpura, where he was bested by BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah. Sisodia thanked his supporters but acknowledged the loss, stating, “We worked hard, and the people supported us, but I lost by 600 votes. I congratulate the winner and hope they work for the constituency.”
Earlier, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva spoke to the media, claiming that Delhi voters have embraced PM Modi’s “good governance model” while rejecting Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership. “The people of Delhi have chosen good governance over Kejriwal’s model, which has been marked by polluted water, poor roads, sanitation issues, and environmental concerns,” he said.
Sachdeva continued, criticizing AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, Sisodia, and Atishi, for allegedly betraying the public. “Their prominent leaders will lose because they have deceived the people. Kejriwal, Sisodia, Atishi—all of them represent corruption, and the people will not forgive them,” he added.
The voter turnout for the February 5 election was 60.54%.
