Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, accusing it of inaction and silence amid ongoing violence in Murshidabad.

Addressing a public gathering, CM Yogi said, “Bengal is burning, and the Chief Minister remains silent. She calls rioters ‘messengers of peace.’ In the name of secularism, they have allowed complete freedom for chaos. Murshidabad has been on fire for a week, but the government has failed to act. This anarchy must end.”

He also praised the Calcutta High Court for intervening and ordering the immediate deployment of central forces in the region to restore order and protect minority communities. “I thank the judiciary for ensuring the safety of Hindus in Murshidabad,” he said, while also criticising the Congress and Samajwadi Party for staying silent on the issue.

Referring to the Waqf Amendment Act, which has been at the centre of the protests in Murshidabad, Adityanath lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for what he called a historic reform. “Thanks to PM Modi and Amit Shah, the Waqf Amendment Act has stopped the looting of land meant for the poor. That land will now be used to build hospitals, schools, and homes. That’s why those with vested interests are creating unrest,” he said.

The Murshidabad violence erupted during protests against the Waqf Act reforms, leading to the deaths of three individuals, several injuries, and extensive property damage. The BJP has blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress for inciting the unrest, citing statements by TMC leaders.

In response, West Bengal police stated on Monday that the situation in Murshidabad had been brought under control, with CRPF and state forces deployed in sensitive areas. “The situation is normal now. Rumours should not be believed. We have set up a control room to assist the public,” said ADG South Bengal Police, Supratim Sarkar.
