Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was warmly welcomed in Kokrajhar on Monday morning as he arrived to attend a historic sitting of the Assam Legislative Assembly outside Guwahati. This is the first time in the state’s history that the Assembly session is being held outside the capital city for a day.
The opening day of the Budget session is taking place at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) assembly in Kokrajhar, sending a powerful message of peace and unity. Buses carrying Assam’s ministers and legislators were seen traveling to the BTC assembly for the occasion.
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika emphasized the significance of the event, noting, “For the first time, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we are holding the assembly session in Kokrajhar. Fifteen years ago, there was a demand for a separate state from the people of Kokrajhar, but today, they are welcoming us. This is a remarkable initiative, and it will continue.”
Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly, Numal Momin, expressed that the session would send a positive message of peace to the Bodoland Territorial Region. He remarked, “Since the BJP government took charge, peace has returned to the BTR, which was once a troubled region. Today, we hold the Budget session and the Governor’s speech in Kokrajhar. This will send a strong message to the people of Assam and align with PM Modi’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.'”
BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia described the event as a historic occasion for Assam, highlighting its significance for the economic and social development of the six scheduled areas. “This will send a powerful message to the people of Assam,” he said.
AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya praised the move as a historic step, noting, “This is the first time in India that an Assembly session is being held outside the capital. It’s a great initiative, especially for the BTC area, which was once underdeveloped and insecure but is now part of the mainstream. This will be seen as a positive step for the development of the Bodo people.”
Congress MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal also recognized the importance of holding the session outside the capital, focusing on the socio-economic development of the ‘sixth schedule’ areas. “This historical budget session will send a strong message of inclusion to the people of these areas,” he said.
AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam highlighted the session as a symbol of peaceful restoration in the region, saying, “This is a testament to the government’s success in restoring peace in the BTC area, which once faced instability. Today, the demand for a separate state is diminishing, and the people of the region are now part of the mainstream.”
The historic Assembly session in Kokrajhar marks a significant step toward peace and development for Assam and the Bodoland Territorial Region.
