Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday to review the security situation in Manipur, following the ongoing violence and political instability in the state. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and other key officials participated in the discussions.
This meeting comes in the wake of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9, amid escalating unrest. On February 13, President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur after the state governor submitted a report to the central government, transferring legislative powers to Parliament and suspending the state government’s authority.
In November 2024, Amit Shah had previously convened a detailed review of the security situation with senior officials to assess the challenges faced by the region. The discussions in Saturday’s meeting focused on recent developments and the response measures being implemented.
Amit Shah also reviewed the security deployment in the state and directed Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police officials to ensure peace and order in Manipur.
The violence in the northeastern state began on May 3, 2024, following clashes during a rally by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) protesting the demand to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
