Zac Efron made a much-anticipated return to the public eye on September 1, attending the ‘amfAR Gala’ at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. This marked his first appearance since a scare in Ibiza landed him in the hospital last month.

Efron, known for his roles in films like ‘High School Musical’ and ‘Baywatch’, kept things sleek and stylish at the event. He was dressed head-to-toe in black, sporting a blazer, T-shirt, and pants, paired with matching sunglasses. Photographers captured him mingling with fellow celebrities, including Richard Gere and Gere’s wife, Alejandra Silva. The trio appeared relaxed, smiling and chatting during the star-studded evening. Richard Gere, who is 75, was honored with amfAR’s Award of Inspiration for his contributions to the fight against AIDS.

The gala, hosted by actress Kate Beckinsale, also paid tribute to actor Antonio Banderas and film producer Mohammed Al Turki. Attendees were treated to live performances by Kelly Rowland and Rumer Willis, making it a night to remember.

Efron’s appearance comes just a month after his representative confirmed to PEOPLE that he had a close call while swimming at a villa in Ibiza on August 2. During a dive, Efron accidentally ingested water and began to struggle, leading to concerns about water in his lungs. Quick-thinking security staff pulled him from the pool and he was taken to the hospital as a precaution. After a thorough check, including X-rays, doctors determined that his lungs were clear, and he was discharged the following morning.

Despite the scare, Efron quickly reassured his fans that he was on the mend. On August 4, just two days after the incident, he posted a photo on social media showing him lifting weights, with the caption, “Happy and healthy. Thanks for the well wishes.”

Efron’s smooth recovery and return to the spotlight have been met with relief and excitement from his fans, who were undoubtedly glad to see him back in action.
